Google have launched Picasa 3, their free photo organising and editing software. I really liked Picasa2 and strongly recommended it. Picasa 3 is even better! As a program to catalogue and manage your photographs I haven’t found anything that is as easy to use. Downloading images from your camera is easy, renaming files is easy, moving photographs between folders is easy, fixing your pictures is easy – in fact, everything is easy, intuitive and fast.
New features in version 3 include a Retouch tool that clones on part of the image onto another which means you can remove blemishes and unwanted items from pictures; a simple animated slideshow feature (think Photostory but not as many features); support for webcams; easy add text overlays to pictures; better integration with web albums; more creative tools and links to UK online digital printing services. I also love the photo viewer that you can opt to become your default image viewer when browsing files in Windows Explorer – much quicker to load than the standard Media Player or Windows Fax and Image viewer, plus more features.
The clever people at Google have also improved existing features, such as the creative tools (you’ll love the improved photo collage tool!) and made subtle changes to the interface that make it easier to manage your work.
