Today I gave a presentation to a group of teachers and educators from KS2 and KS3 looking at the ways in which ICT could be used to support PSHE. The presentation was part of a wonderful day of workshops and presentations based around the theme of “Active Learning and Teaching” in SEAL and PSHE.
For my presentation I looked at the following areas:
Using the IWB effectively – use of the IWB to record discussions and responses; using the spotlight tool to good effect; using the screen capture tool to focus discussion; use of simple layering techniques with text to structure discussions and debates. Watch the video recap here.
Use of PhotoStory – creating videos that support units of work; engaging the children in texts and supporting drama work.
Using Voting Devices – looking at how quizzes can be used to tackle some of the more tricky issues; allow children to participate in an anonymous way; engaging all pupils. Examples of devices: Quizdom, ActiVote, Turning Point and Senteo.
Annotating images – creating comic books to explore feelings and others’ points of view; using tools such as Comic Book Creator and Comic Life.
Cropping and fading images – a simple but powerful technique to engage and focus children on key parts of an image. View the helpsheet here.
And don’t forget to take a look at the website that Malcolm Haas recommended: ted.com.
